What Makes Stainless Welding Different
The whole point of stainless is the chromium oxide layer that protects it — and heat is its enemy. Weld stainless too hot or too slow and the chromium combines with carbon instead of protecting the surface; the metal “sugars” on the back side and rusts at the heat-affected zone. Proper stainless steel welding means controlled heat, back-purging tubes and tanks with argon so the inside of the weld stays clean, matching filler to the alloy (304, 316, and their low-carbon versions are different animals), and post-weld cleanup — pickling or passivating — so the protective layer re-forms. Skip any of those and the weld works until it quietly doesn’t.

Small stainless repairs — a cracked bracket, a broken hinge, a split seam — typically run $100–$300. Tank and vessel repair is quoted after inspection, usually $250–$900 for weld repair plus finish work. Custom fabrication is quoted from your sketch or sample part. Most repair work turns in 1–3 days; purged pipe work and food-grade finishing take longer than quick-and-dirty, because quick-and-dirty is exactly what stainless punishes. 304, 316, and Why the Alloy Matters
Most stainless in Iowa is 304 — the general-purpose grade on food equipment, tanks, and fabrication. 316 shows up where chlorides and chemicals live: chemical tankers, some ag processing, marine hardware. They look identical and weld differently, and using 304 filler on a 316 part quietly throws away the corrosion resistance the customer paid for. Part of professional stainless steel welding is identifying the alloy before striking an arc — from markings, from the application, or with a spark and magnet check when the paperwork is long gone — and matching filler accordingly.
Common Stainless Questions
Why is there a rust line next to the old weld? That’s carbide precipitation from overheating — the weld destroyed the corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. The fix is grinding out the affected band and rewelding with proper technique, then passivating. Can you weld stainless to regular steel? Yes, with the right dissimilar filler (309) — common on brackets and repairs where stainless meets a steel frame. Does the weld need to be polished? In product-contact zones, yes — sanitary finish is part of the job, not an upsell. Elsewhere it’s your call and your budget. Thin stainless sheet — can it be welded without warping? That’s precisely what TIG at low amperage with proper fixturing is for; warped panels come from welders in a hurry, and stainless steel welding is not a discipline that rewards hurry.
