Hydraulic Cylinders — The Bread And Butter Of Backhoe Repair
The most frequent backhoe repair jobs we handle are hydraulic cylinder rebuilds. A typical TLB has eight to ten hydraulic cylinders in service, and every one of them cycles hundreds of times per work day: loader lift, loader tilt, boom, stick, swing, bucket curl, two stabilizers, and sometimes an extendable dipper. Rod seals wear predictably, and once a cylinder starts weeping the machine drifts under load and the operator overloads the good cylinders compensating. We rebuild individual cylinders with new seals, replace rods where they’ve been pitted or scored, hone barrels when they’re within honing tolerance, and pressure-test at working PSI before the cylinder goes back on the machine. Turnaround on cylinder-only work is typically 3–5 days.
Hydraulic Pump And Valve Work
Beyond cylinders, backhoe repair on the pump side is a real category. Backhoe main pumps are typically gear or piston pumps depending on generation, and they age predictably from a combination of fluid contamination and normal service duty. Symptoms of a failing pump: slow machine motions, whine or howl under load, working pressure that falls off at heat, and increased case-drain flow. We diagnose pumps on the machine, then either bench-rebuild or spec a replacement. Main-control valve work is a specialty within backhoe hydraulics — the valve stack sees debris and wear, and internal spool leakage causes multiple functions to drift or interact. We can rebuild individual valve sections and replace failed spools.
Structural And Frame Repair
Structural backhoe repair is the third big lane. Backhoe booms crack at high-stress weld locations from cumulative shock load, especially on machines that see rock work. Loader arms crack at the bucket-attachment weldments. Frames crack at the swing-post attachment and at stabilizer mount plates. Every one of these is standard structural welding for us. We approach backhoe weld repair with the assumption the machine will see full load again — that means doubler plates and gussets where geometry allows, not just closing the crack. Repeated failure at the same weld location means the design geometry is under-built for the actual load, and we’ll talk you through gusseting options.

We do not do engine rebuilds, we do not troubleshoot ECU/CAN-bus issues on newer Tier-4 machines, and we don’t do transmission internals on power-shift units — those go back to dealer service. Common Backhoe Problems By Machine Age
Backhoe repair patterns shift with machine age. Machines under 3000 hours typically need hose replacement and occasional cylinder rebuilds — wear is starting but not systemic. Machines 3000–8000 hours are the sweet spot for our shop — cylinders need rebuild in rotation, the hydraulic pump may need attention, and hitch/bucket pin bores start showing wear. Machines above 8000 hours often benefit from a full go-through: main pump rebuild, all cylinders through the bench, hose replacement, and structural weld inspection. That’s a real investment, but the alternative is trading for a newer machine at 10–20x the cost of the rebuild bundle. The other backhoe repair economics worth knowing: swing-mechanism repair on older TLBs is often overlooked until the swing gets sloppy under load.
