Boom Cylinders And Extend/Retract Hydraulics

The core hydraulic system on a telehandler is what makes telehandler repair its own specialty. Every telescoping-boom telehandler has multiple boom-section cylinders working in sequence: primary lift, extend, sometimes retract, and often a fork-tilt or attachment-tilt cylinder at the boom end. Each cylinder cycles continuously in normal use — a telehandler on a busy construction site might lift and set loads hundreds of times per day. Rod seals wear predictably, and cylinder rods pit from the constant dust-and-debris environment of jobsite work. We rebuild boom cylinders individually with new seals, replace rods where pitted, hone barrels where within tolerance, and pressure-test at working PSI before reinstall. On multi-stage boom systems where extend and retract cylinders work in a synchronized sequence, we time-adjust after rebuild so the boom moves without hesitation across the full stroke.

Boom Chain, Sheave, And Wear Pad Service

The other side of telehandler repair is the mechanical boom — the boom sections themselves. Boom-section wear pads take real load and wear at predictable rates. When wear pads get too thin, the boom sections start to bind and jerk during extension. We inspect wear pads on every boom-related repair, replace them where they’ve reached service limit, and adjust boom-section alignment where needed. Boom chains on chain-driven extension systems stretch and eventually break; we replace individual chains and re-adjust chain tension. Sheaves and rollers in the boom sections wear from constant load; we replace them individually as part of a boom service. On telehandler-repair jobs that involve intermittent binding or noise from the boom, the fix is almost always in the wear-pad and chain area, not the cylinders.

Main Pump, Load-Sense Valve, And Outriggers

Main hydraulic pump work on telehandlers is the next big category. Telehandlers typically run load-sensing hydraulic systems, and pump wear or valve internal wear both cause slow cycle times, function drift, or interaction between functions. We diagnose pumps under load, then either bench-rebuild or coordinate replacement. Load-sense valve service is a specialty within telehandler repair; internal spool wear causes precision-load-handling problems. On outrigger-equipped telehandlers, outrigger cylinder rebuilds are additional work — and getting the outriggers right matters for safe load handling at height.

Frame And Structural Repair

Structural telehandler repair: boom weldment cracks at the boom-to-turret joint, boom-section weldments that fail from cumulative shock, chassis frame cracks at outrigger mounts, and fork carriage weldments. Every one is standard structural welding for us. Doubler plates and gussets where the geometry allows. Because telehandlers lift real load to real height, structural work on these machines has zero tolerance for a poor weld — we don’t cut corners.

Load-moment-indicator (LMI) calibration and safety-system electronic diagnostics are dealer-specific work; we don’t touch them. Why Independent Telehandler Repair Beats Rental Replacement

When a telehandler goes down, the reflex on some jobsites is to send it back to the dealer and rent a replacement. The math often doesn’t work. Rental on a large telehandler is real money per week, and dealer service on the down machine is often 3–5 weeks out at dealer labor rates. Independent telehandler repair at our shop is typically 5–10 business days at fair shop rates — often less than one week of rental cost, and you end up with your own machine back in service instead of paying rental into perpetuity.

The other case where independent telehandler repair wins hard is on older machines that are otherwise fully depreciated. A 12-year-old JLG G6-42A or Genie GTH-844 with cylinder problems and wear-pad drift is not a candidate for a $150K new machine trade — it’s a candidate for $6K–$12K in shop labor and parts.
