Dump Trailer Restoration In Iowa
Dump trailer restoration is heavy work. Dump trailers earn their money in the roughest applications — aggregate, dirt, demolition debris, agricultural — and after 10-15 years of loading, dumping, and getting scraped by loader buckets, the body, floor, and hydraulic system all need attention. Our shop is in Ames, Iowa. We do dump trailer restoration on end-dumps, side-dumps, and belly-dumps for contractors, aggregate haulers, and small fleets.
What A Dump Trailer Restoration Job Looks Like
The failure list on a dump trailer is fairly consistent. Floor plate wears thin from constant scraping. Side walls get dented and cracked. The hoist cylinder leaks. The pump gets contaminated. Frame cross-members crack from years of load-and-unload cycles. Suspension sags. Wiring rots out. Brakes wear. A dump trailer restoration addresses all of these — some jobs need everything, some jobs need targeted work — and puts the trailer back into service ready for another decade.
Floor Plate Replacement
The floor plate is the most-worn surface on any dump trailer. Aggregate scraping thins it, loader buckets ding it, and eventually holes appear. Dump trailer restoration usually includes patching thin sections with new plate weld, or on badly-worn trailers, replacing the entire floor plate. We use AR400 or AR450 abrasion-resistant steel plate on floors that will keep hauling rock — it lasts twice as long as mild steel. On lighter-duty applications standard mild steel plate is fine.
Side Wall Repair
Dump trailer side walls take dings from loaders and cracks from load flex over years. We straighten dents, weld cracks, and replace side plate sections that are beyond repair. On aluminum dump trailers we do aluminum TIG or MIG welding for structural side repair. On steel trailers standard MIG welding covers it.
Hoist Cylinder And Hydraulic System Rebuild
The single biggest dump trailer restoration job is often the hydraulic system. Hoist cylinders leak, pumps lose pressure, and hoses fail from years of flex. We rebuild the hoist cylinder (rod polish, seal kit, honing, pressure test), service or replace the pump, and replace all hydraulic hoses with new. On telescopic cylinders we can rebuild any of the stages. On scissor-hoist trailers we rebuild the whole hoist mechanism as needed.
Frame, Cross-Members, And Suspension
Dump trailer frames take the load-and-unload cycle stress differently than static trailers. Cross-members can crack at welds, especially near the hoist pivot pin. Restoration includes inspection of the frame for cracks and welding repair as needed. Suspension springs sag over years — we replace with new. Air-ride and torsion axle systems get inspected and serviced.
Brakes, Wheels, Wiring
Dump trailer brakes take heat and abuse. Full brake system service is standard on restoration — drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware, new bearings. Wiring gets replaced with new marine-grade harness, LED lighting upgrade optional, 7-way plug rebuild at the hitch.
Cost Ranges For Dump Trailer Restoration
Partial dump trailer restoration — hoist rebuild, brake service, wiring — runs $2,500 to $4,500. Fuller restoration with floor plate replacement, side panel weld, hydraulic system service, and suspension work runs $4,500 to $9,000. Ground-up restoration with AR400 floor, full side and rear plate weld, complete hydraulic overhaul, and frame repair pushes $8,000 to $15,000. Every job gets a written estimate before we start.
Free Pickup And Delivery
A dump trailer that needs restoration usually is not safe to tow. We offer free pickup and delivery within roughly 60 miles of Ames for dump trailer restoration. Farther out we coordinate a hauler.
Timeline
Dump trailer restoration is a 3-6 week job depending on scope. Partial restorations turn in 2-3 weeks. Full restorations run 4-6 weeks. We update the customer weekly on progress.
Common Questions About Dump Trailer Restoration
Is AR400 floor worth the extra cost? If you’re hauling rock, aggregate, or demolition debris, yes. AR400 lasts roughly twice as long as mild steel for maybe 30% more cost. On dirt or lighter materials, standard plate is fine.
Can you convert my dump trailer to a bigger hoist? Sometimes. It depends on the frame’s cross-member spacing and the mounting geometry. We evaluate case by case as part of dump trailer restoration scoping.
Do you rebuild the pump and controls or replace them? Both, depending on condition. Rebuildable pumps get seal kits and testing; badly worn ones get replaced. Controls (cab-mounted valves, air-shift) usually get replaced with new.
Will the restored dump trailer pass DOT inspection? Yes. Full FMVSS inspection is done and documented.
Iowa Contractor And Aggregate Hauler Coverage
We do dump trailer restoration for contractors, aggregate haulers, demolition operations, and small fleets throughout central Iowa. Customers bring trailers to us from Ankeny, Boone, Marshalltown, Nevada, Grimes, Waukee, Johnston, Newton, and further out. Free pickup and delivery within roughly 60 miles of Ames covers most of the metro; farther out we coordinate a hauler.
Timing Around Construction Season
Dump trailer restoration is best scheduled between construction seasons in Iowa — late fall through early spring is the low-load window. If you can get the trailer to us in October or November, restoration is complete before spring construction fires up and the trailer is ready for a full working season. If the restoration is emergency mid-season, tell us and we’ll prioritize the job so you’re back on the road as quickly as possible. Dump trailer restoration during off-season is cheaper on downtime cost than emergency work, and it also gives us time to work through the job carefully without pressure to skip inspection steps.
