What Custom Hydraulic System Design Means
Every custom hydraulic system design starts with the same question: what does the system need to do? Answering that means understanding the load — how much force, how fast, in what pattern — and the environment — what runs the pump, how hot does it get, how clean is the fluid going to stay. Once we know the load and the environment, we spec the components: pump type and displacement, motor or electric drive, reservoir size, filtration, valves, and plumbing. Then we build it, plumb it, wire it, and pressure-test it before it leaves the shop.
Custom Hydraulic Power Units
A hydraulic power unit (HPU) is a self-contained pump-motor-reservoir package that generates hydraulic pressure for whatever needs it. We design custom HPUs for shop presses, industrial machinery, mobile equipment, test benches, and specialty applications. Custom hydraulic system design for an HPU means picking the pump type (gear for lower pressure, piston for higher pressure or continuous duty), sizing the electric motor or gas engine, spec’ing the reservoir for cooling and cleanliness, and building the manifold and valves for the required output control.
Manifold Design And Fabrication
Manifolds route hydraulic fluid to different circuits with valves controlling pressure, flow, and direction. Custom manifold design is required whenever off-the-shelf manifolds don’t match what the application needs. We machine or spec manifold bodies, install cartridge valves (Sun, Parker, Eaton), plumb the ports, and test the finished manifold on a bench before we install it in the final system.

Custom hydraulic system design for PTO-driven mobile equipment is a specialty. Snow plow trucks, service trucks, dump trucks, vac trucks, aerial lifts, and specialty vocational trucks all need hydraulic systems driven by the truck’s PTO. We design these systems for OEM builders (helping small trailer and body manufacturers build repeatable products) and for one-off customer builds.
Mobile Equipment Integration

The first meeting is understanding the application. What does it do, how often, at what force? We visit the customer’s site if that’s helpful. Then we draft a schematic — pump size, valve layout, reservoir size, plumbing. Customer reviews and approves. Then we source and build. Then we bench-test. Then we install (or ship) the finished system. Total timeline is typically 3-8 weeks depending on complexity and parts lead times.

A basic custom HPU for a shop press or benchtop application might run $1,500 to $4,000 all-in. A more complex mobile PTO-driven package with multi-circuit manifold and controls runs $4,000 to $12,000. Full engineered systems with multiple pumps, complex valve logic, and OEM-quality build for equipment manufacturers can run $8,000 to $30,000 or more depending on scope.
