Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Chroming — Restoring Damaged Rods

Hydraulic cylinder rod chroming is the specialty process of stripping worn or damaged chrome from a cylinder rod and re-plating fresh chrome to spec thickness. When a cylinder rod is too pitted for polish to restore but not damaged enough to require full replacement, re-chroming is the right fix. It restores a smooth, wear-resistant surface at 40-60% of the cost of a new rod, and extends the cylinder’s remaining life by 5-10 years.

We manage the hydraulic cylinder rod chroming process — we pull the rod, prep it, ship it to a specialty chroming facility, receive it back, verify the finish, and reassemble into the cylinder as part of the rebuild. Customers don’t have to coordinate with chroming shops directly; we handle the whole workflow.

When Rod Chroming Is The Right Fix

Three levels of rod damage correspond to three fixes. Light pitting: polish on our bench, $150-$400. Moderate pitting: hydraulic cylinder rod chroming, $500-$1,500 depending on size. Severe damage: rod replacement, $400-$2,500. Chroming is the middle tier — for rods where polish won’t restore smoothness but the underlying steel is sound.

The Chroming Process

The specialty chroming shop we work with does the actual plating work. Their process: mount the rod, strip old chrome via electrochemical reverse plating, inspect the underlying steel for damage, machine the surface if needed to restore proper diameter, re-plate chrome to spec thickness (usually 0.001-0.003 inch), and polish to final surface finish. Total shop time at the chroming facility is 3-7 business days depending on their queue and rod size.

How Chrome Thickness Affects Cylinder Fit

New chrome plating is applied slightly thicker than the final target, then polished down to spec. The chroming shop measures the final rod diameter to within a thousandth of an inch — required so the rod fits the cylinder’s gland and rod seals correctly. Under-plated rods slip past the wipers. Over-plated rods drag on the gland or bind. Getting the finished rod diameter exactly right is why chroming is a specialty operation, not something a general shop attempts.

What Chroming Cannot Fix

Hydraulic cylinder rod chroming has limits. Bent rods can’t be re-chromed straight — they have to be replaced. Rods with deep structural pitting where the underlying steel is compromised can’t be re-chromed because there’s no smooth steel base for new chrome to bond to. Rods with cracks are not candidates for re-chroming. In these cases we recommend replacement.

Cost Ranges For Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Chroming

Small rods (under 2-inch diameter, under 24-inch length): $400-$700 for chroming alone. Medium rods (2-4 inch diameter, 24-60 inch length): $600-$1,200. Large rods (4-6 inch diameter, 60+ inch length): $1,000-$2,000. Very large rods on excavator boom and wheel-loader cylinders: $1,500-$3,000. These are chroming-only costs. Add the standard cylinder rebuild ($400-$1,500) for total job cost.

Turnaround With Rod Chroming

Standard cylinder rebuild with hydraulic cylinder rod chroming is a 12-20 business day job. Breakdown: 2-3 days for us to disassemble and prep the rod, 5-7 days at the specialty chroming facility, 2-3 days for us to receive, inspect, reassemble, and pressure test. If the customer needs the cylinder back faster and rod replacement is viable, we sometimes recommend replacement over re-chroming to save 5-7 days.

Chroming Vs Replacement Math

Hydraulic cylinder rod chroming makes sense when the rod cost delta between re-chrome and new replacement is significant. On common small and medium rods where new replacement is $400-$1,000, chroming at $500-$800 is not enough savings — replacement is often the better call. On larger rods where new replacement is $1,500-$3,000+, chroming at $1,000-$1,500 saves significant money and is worth the extra week of turnaround. We evaluate case by case.

Chrome Quality And Warranty

The specialty chroming facility we work with has been in operation for decades and produces work that lasts. Re-chromed rods typically run another 5-10 years of normal service before showing wear. We warranty rebuild work (including re-chromed rods) for 6 months against defects and workmanship. The chroming shop’s own quality is separate but we’ve had a very low failure rate on their work over years of doing hydraulic cylinder rod chroming jobs.

Customer brings the cylinder to our shop. We disassemble, inspect the rod, and decide with the customer whether chroming, polish, or replacement is the right call. Common Questions About Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Chroming

Can I have the rod chromed but not rebuild the cylinder? Technically yes, but it’s inefficient. The cylinder has to come apart anyway to remove the rod, so replacing seals during reassembly costs almost nothing extra.

How can I tell if my rod is a chroming candidate or needs replacement? Depth of damage. Text photos and we’ll assess.

Does chrome peel or flake after re-chroming? Not from properly done work. Failed chrome usually indicates poor plating technique or bad prep — both avoidable at the specialty facility we work with.

Is chroming environmentally regulated? Yes, chroming is a regulated industrial process. That’s why we don’t do it in-house — the specialty facility has the permits and environmental controls.
