For commuters, cargo bikes, gravel rigs, and shop bikes, a proper TIG repair with reinforcement is a sound, honest fix that rides for years. For a superlight race frame where every gram was engineered against failure, we’ll tell you straight: bike frame repair has limits, and a critical crack on a minimal race frame is a replacement conversation, not a welding job. How a Frame Repair Actually Goes

The process is simpler than people expect. You text a photo of the crack — that’s the free assessment, and it filters out the frames that shouldn’t be welded before anyone spends anything. If it’s a candidate, the bike comes in stripped (or your shop strips it; we work with the local shops, not against them). The crack gets ground out and inspected, because paint hides the true length — a visible half-inch crack is often an inch and a half under the finish. The repair is TIG-welded with matched filler, reinforced where the engineering wants it — a sleeve, a gusset, or a fish-mouthed patch depending on the tube and location — then dressed smooth. You get the frame back paint-ready with an honest read on what it’s now good for. Most bike frame repair is a week or less door to door, and the weld area is usually the strongest section of tube on the bike when it leaves.

The Honest-No List

Part of doing bike frame repair credibly is being clear about what we won’t weld. Carbon fiber — never; that’s bonded composite work, not welding, and anyone offering to weld it should scare you. Forks — almost never; a fork failure is a face-first failure, and the risk math rarely works. Cracked head tubes on ultralight race frames where the wall thickness is paper — we’ll look, but expect a no. Suspension frame pivots that have ovaled out — sometimes machinable, honestly assessed. Everything else — commuters, tourers, cargo rigs, tandems, trailers, vintage steel — is usually a yes. The photo assessment costs nothing, and a fast no with a straight explanation beats a slow maybe from someone who wants the job more than they respect the failure mode.
