Concrete mixer repair on ready-mix chassis is a specialized category. The mixer drum drive is a heavy hydraulic system operating continuously under high load, and the failure modes on a ready-mix truck are different from any other vocational vehicle. At Ames Hydraulics we handle the drum-drive hydraulic system, chute hydraulics, water system, and frame work on ready-mix trucks — McNeilus mixers, Continental mixers, Oshkosh Front-Discharge (S-Series), Beck front-discharge, and Terex/Advance rear-discharge chassis. We do NOT do drum liner replacement or fin replacement inside the drum — that’s specialty mixer-body work best handled at a mixer-specific shop.

Drum Drive Pump And Motor — The Core Of Mixer Hydraulics

The single largest hydraulic system on a ready-mix truck is the drum drive. A closed-loop hydrostatic system with a variable-displacement piston pump driven off the truck engine (usually via PTO), driving a large piston motor that turns the drum through a reduction gearbox. When this system starts to fail, the symptoms are clear: slow drum speed, drum won’t reverse, working pressure drops off under load, or the pump won’t build pressure at all. Concrete mixer repair on the drum-drive side is our sweet spot — we’ve rebuilt these pumps and motors many times, we know the pattern, and we pressure-test the full system at working PSI before the truck goes back on the road.

Common drum-drive failures: pump case-drain flow above spec (pump internal wear), motor case-drain flow above spec (motor internal wear), charge-pressure failure (charge pump wear or filter clogged), and system contamination from failed hoses or reservoir issues. We diagnose the specific failure, rebuild or replace the pump or motor as needed, flush the whole loop, replace all filters, and refill with clean fluid before startup. Whole-loop cleanup is not optional on a ready-mix drum drive — if you leave contamination in the loop, the rebuilt component fails within weeks.

Chute Hydraulics, Water System, And Frame

Beyond the drum drive, ready-mix concrete mixer repair touches chute-swing and chute-lift cylinders, chute-fold cylinders on some units, water-tank pump work, and body-frame welding. Chute cylinders are standard hydraulic rebuilds — new seals, replace rods where pitted, pressure test. Water-tank pump and plumbing work is straight mechanical service. Frame welding on ready-mix chassis is a real thing because the loaded weight on these trucks fatigues frame rails and crossmembers over time; we do structural welding with the same doubler-plate approach we use on other vocational trucks.

PTO And Driveline On Mixers

PTO service is standard shop work for us: rebuild the PTO where oil leakage or bearing noise indicates it’s needed, replace U-joints in the pump drive-shaft, and check the pump-mount alignment. A misaligned pump drive shortens the pump’s service life dramatically — correcting the alignment after we rebuild the pump makes the rebuild last. On heavy-hour concrete mixer repair jobs where the whole drum-drive system is being refreshed, we also inspect and replace the PTO output shaft seals as a matter of course — those seals fail without warning and can leak oil into the driveline where it causes secondary damage.
