Corn planter repair is another in-season, downtime-critical job. Every day a planter sits in April or early May, that field slides toward a later planting date and lower yield potential. Planter Hydraulics — Down-Pressure, Lift, And Fold Cylinders

The biggest corn planter repair category we see is planter hydraulics. Three subsystems matter: row-unit down-pressure (hydraulic or pneumatic depending on generation), planter lift cylinders that raise the whole toolbar for road transport and end-row turns, and fold cylinders on center-fold and stack-fold planters. Down-pressure cylinders on hydraulic-down-pressure planters (many JD, some Kinze) are small-bore, high-cycle-count components — they see thousands of cycles per field, and rod seals wear predictably every 5–7 years of heavy use. We rebuild them individually, keep the seals in stock for the common sizes, and turn around cylinder-only work in a few days.

Planter lift cylinders and fold cylinders see less cycles but more shock load, and the failure mode is different — usually rod damage from an obstruction hit during transport or fold, or barrel damage from a pin failure. On corn planter repair where the rod is pitted or the barrel is dinged, we hone or replace as the diagnosis calls for, then pressure test before reinstall. Getting the fold cylinders right matters — a planter that doesn’t fold cleanly at 5am in the shed will burn 45 minutes of daylight fighting it every morning.

Frame, Hitch, And Toolbar Weld Repair

Structural corn planter repair is the other lane. Planter toolbars fatigue at row-unit attachment points, at the folding joints, and at the hitch. On stack-fold planters especially, the hinge pin bores wear oval over time and the fold geometry drifts. We can weld new bar material into worn bores and re-machine to spec, or bush the bore with an interference-fit sleeve depending on how much material is available. Hitch and tongue repair on pull-type planters is straight-up structural welding — twist damage from a tight turn, or fatigue cracks from cumulative shock load. We approach hitch welds with the assumption the planter will see load again, meaning doubler plates and gussets where the geometry allows, not just closing the crack.

Row-Unit Mechanical Repair

On mechanical row-unit repair we handle the hard parts — parallel-arm pivot bushings, gauge-wheel arm bushings, closing-wheel arm bushings, drag-chain repair on chain-drive units, and mechanical shaft repair. We do NOT do meter calibration, seed-tube sensor work, or electronic row-shutoff diagnostics on corn planter repair — that’s precision-ag work best handled at a JD or Kinze dealer with the diagnostic tools. What we own is anything that involves steel, bushings, welds, or hydraulic components.

Between-Season Overhaul Timing

The right time for real corn planter repair in Iowa is November through February — harvest is done, planting is months off, and you can bring the planter in for a full go-through without pressure. We inspect toolbar welds, check every hydraulic cylinder for weep, look at hitch and fold-joint pin bores, and pull row units for a bushing inspection where the customer wants it. A planter that gets this treatment every 2–3 winters shows up ready-to-run every April, which is worth more than every dollar in the shop bill.
