Hydraulic Cylinder Pressure Test — Bench Verification Before Reinstall
Every cylinder we rebuild goes on the bench for a pressure test before it ships back to the customer. Hydraulic cylinder pressure test is the final quality check — it verifies the rebuilt cylinder holds pressure at rated operating pressure without external leaks, without piston bypass, and through full extend and retract functions. Skipping this step is how bad rebuilds ship out into service and fail within days. We don’t skip it.

What A Hydraulic Cylinder Pressure Test Actually Checks
Three things get verified. First, external leak-tightness — the cylinder holds pressure without weeping oil from the rod seal, the port fittings, the barrel wall, or the end cap. Second, internal bypass check — the piston seal holds pressure across the piston without allowing fluid to bypass from one side of the piston to the other. Third, full cycle function — the cylinder extends smoothly to full stroke and retracts smoothly to full retracted length without binding or jerking.
How The Test Runs
Cylinder mounted in the bench fixture. Hydraulic power unit connected. Fluid filled and air bled. Pressure ramped up to rated operating pressure of the machine the cylinder came from — usually 2,500-3,500 psi. Held at pressure for a soak period (5-10 minutes) while the technician watches for external leaks. Then the cylinder is cycled through several full extend and retract cycles at full flow. Between cycles, the extend side is pressurized and the retract side is dead-headed to check piston seal bypass. Any leak, any drift under load, or any binding fails the test.
What Happens If A Cylinder Fails The Test
If a rebuilt cylinder fails the hydraulic cylinder pressure test, it doesn’t ship. We open it back up, find the cause of the failure — usually a seal that got pinched during assembly, a barrel we needed to hone that we didn’t hone, or a rod issue we missed on inspection — and correct it. The customer isn’t billed for the retest, and the cylinder doesn’t go back into service with a known problem.
Rated Operating Pressure By Machine Type
Different machines run different operating pressures, and hydraulic cylinder pressure test is done at the machine’s actual rating, not a generic number. Skid steers: 3,000-3,500 psi. Backhoes: 2,800-3,500 psi. Boom lifts: 3,000-3,500 psi. Excavators: 3,000-4,000 psi. Wheel loaders: 3,000-4,000 psi. Dump trailers: 2,500-3,000 psi. Ag tractors: 2,000-2,800 psi on older equipment, 3,000-3,500 on modern. Cylinders get tested at the actual rating so we know they’ll perform in their real service environment.
Standalone Hydraulic Cylinder Pressure Test Service
Sometimes a customer wants independent verification. Common cases: cylinder was rebuilt somewhere else and the customer wants a second opinion on whether it holds. Or the customer bought a used cylinder and wants to verify it works before installing. Or the customer suspects internal bypass but wants confirmation before committing to rebuild.
Standalone hydraulic cylinder pressure test runs $150-$400 depending on cylinder size. Customer brings the cylinder in, we mount it on the bench, run the test, and write up findings. Report indicates external leak status, bypass status, and cycle function. If the customer decides to proceed with rebuild after testing, the test cost gets credited toward the rebuild.
Bench Fixture Capacity
Our test bench handles cylinders up to about 8-inch bore and 8-foot stroke. Weight capacity roughly 500 pounds per cylinder. Most cylinders come in under those limits. Larger cylinders — main-boom cylinders on the biggest excavators, oversize industrial cylinders — occasionally exceed our bench capacity. In those cases we can pressure test in the field or refer to specialty testing facilities.
Why This Matters
Cylinders that fail after installation are catastrophic. A boom cylinder that leaks 100 hours after rebuild has to be pulled again, adding labor cost. A cylinder that develops piston bypass drops a load on someone’s foot. Hydraulic cylinder pressure test on the bench catches most of these failures before the cylinder goes back on the machine. It’s the difference between a professional rebuild and a hope-it-works rebuild.
Documentation
Every rebuild includes a rebuild slip that documents what was done and includes the pressure test result. Customers keep the slip for maintenance records; on regulated equipment (aerial lifts, some fleet trailers) the pressure test documentation is required for annual inspections. We provide it as part of every job.
Common Questions About Hydraulic Cylinder Pressure Test
How long does the test take? Typically 30-60 minutes per cylinder including setup, ramp-up, soak, and cycle testing. Larger cylinders take longer.
Can you test a cylinder that’s currently installed on a machine? A partial pressure test can be done in-machine but full bench testing requires the cylinder to be removed and mounted independently.
What if I want the cylinder tested at higher than rated pressure? Over-pressure testing can damage the cylinder. We test at rated pressure — that’s the safe verification threshold.
Do you warranty rebuilds after passing hydraulic cylinder pressure test? Yes, 6 months against defects and workmanship.
