Hydraulic Cylinder Rod Pitted — Three Levels Of Damage, Three Fixes

Hydraulic cylinder rod pitted is a symptom on the cylinder rod itself — the smooth chrome-plated surface where the rod extends and retracts through the barrel gland. When the chrome plating pits, the rod’s smooth surface becomes rough enough to eat rod seals faster than normal. Once the pitting extends past the wiper seal contact zone, the rod eats new seals within weeks. What Causes A Hydraulic Cylinder Rod To Pit

Chrome plating pits from four common attackers. First, moisture — humidity, rain, and washdown water sit on exposed chrome and eventually corrode through it. Second, road salt in winter service — the salt attacks chrome plating aggressively. Third, dirt and grit trapped past a failed wiper seal — the abrasive material scours the chrome as the rod cycles. Fourth, chemical exposure — feedlot ammonia, agricultural chemistry, and industrial washdown chemicals all damage chrome over time.

Level 1 — Light Surface Pitting (Polish)

Light pitting is small, shallow pits that don’t fully break through the chrome layer. The rod feels rough where it’s supposed to feel smooth. If you scratch a fingernail across it, you can feel discrete pit locations but the rod isn’t visibly damaged from a few feet away. Fix: bench polish. We remove the rod, mount it in a polishing setup, and remove surface damage with progressively finer abrasives. Result is a smooth rod again — not new chrome, but smooth enough for new seals to last their full life. Adds $150-$400 to a standard cylinder rebuild.

Level 2 — Moderate Pitting (Re-Chrome)

Moderate pitting is visible from a few feet away — chrome has flaked or worn through in patches. The rod looks discolored. Seals fail within weeks or months of being replaced because the rough rod surface eats them. Fix: send the rod out to a specialty chroming shop for re-chroming. They strip old chrome, replate to spec thickness, and polish smooth. Adds $500-$1,500 to a cylinder rebuild depending on rod size. Adds one week to the timeline for the specialty work.

Level 3 — Severe Pitting (Rod Replacement)

Severe pitting means chrome has failed extensively — the base steel is visible, there’s structural pitting into the rod itself, or the rod has scored from running on failed chrome. Re-chroming won’t work because the underlying rod is compromised. Fix: replace the rod with new. New rods for common cylinder sizes are available from suppliers within a few days; specialty rods for older or custom equipment can be fabricated if needed. Adds $400-$2,500 to a cylinder rebuild depending on size and availability.

How To Assess Which Level You Have

Extend the cylinder fully so the rod is exposed. Wipe it clean. Run your fingernail down the length of the rod. If you feel small individual pits but the rod visibly looks OK — Level 1, polish. If you see visible flaking, discoloration, or patchy chrome — Level 2, re-chrome. If you see bare steel, deep scoring, or the rod feels rough across most of its surface — Level 3, replace. Why Fixing Rod Pitting Matters

Rebuilding a cylinder with a hydraulic cylinder rod pitted at Level 2 or Level 3 without addressing the rod is a waste of money. The new seals will fail within weeks because they can’t hold pressure against a rough rod surface. Doing the rebuild properly means either polishing, re-chroming, or replacing the rod at the same time as the seal kit goes in.

Preventing Rod Pitting

Rod pitting is preventable to a large degree. Retract cylinders when the machine is stored so exposed rod length is minimized. Wipe rod surfaces before storage if the machine sat in a wet environment. Grease exposed rod chrome on machines that store outdoors long-term. Replace failed wiper seals as soon as they leak — the wiper is the rod’s protection.

Turnaround

Level 1 polish adds 1-2 days to a rebuild. Level 2 re-chrome adds 5-10 days for the specialty work. Level 3 rod replacement adds 3-10 days depending on rod availability. Rebuild plus polish jobs typically turn in 5-10 business days total. Rebuild plus re-chrome jobs run 12-20 business days.

Is polishing a permanent fix? For Level 1 damage, yes — polishing restores smoothness and seals last their normal life. For Level 2 or Level 3, polishing doesn’t work.
