PTO installation is a specialized upfit category that touches almost every hydraulic truck we work on. What A Correct PTO Installation Requires

A correct PTO installation is more than bolting a gearbox to the side of the transmission. We size the PTO for the driven-load application — a small pump for a wet-kit requires a different gear ratio and output shaft than a large pump driving a refuse-packer body or a dump-hoist system. Getting the ratio wrong means either the pump doesn’t produce full flow at reasonable engine RPM, or the pump over-runs at road speed. We match the PTO to the load, torque the mounting bolts to transmission-manufacturer spec, seal the mounting flange properly to prevent transmission fluid leaks, and function-test PTO engagement and disengagement through the shift range.

Common PTO Installation Applications

The most common PTO installation jobs we handle:

  • Wet-kit installation on OTR tractors — a small PTO driving a hydraulic pump for trailer-mounted equipment (dump trailers, walking floors, live floors)
  • Dump-hoist PTO on class 4–8 dump trucks — medium to large PTO driving a hydraulic pump for the hoist cylinder
  • Refuse-truck PTO — heavy-duty PTO driving pack, dump, and eject hydraulics
  • Tanker PTO — PTO driving a product pump on fuel or water tanker chassis
  • Salt-spreader PTO on municipal plow trucks — PTO driving auxiliary hydraulic circuit for spreader function
  • Boom-truck PTO on utility trucks — PTO driving hydraulic power for boom, outriggers, and auxiliary functions

Transmission-Specific PTO Installation Notes

Allison automatic PTO installation is straightforward when the transmission has a factory PTO opening (most 2000/3000/4000 series do). The PTO bolts to the transmission case, drives off a gear on the transmission mainshaft, and engages via a solenoid or lever depending on the PTO. Eaton Fuller manual transmission PTO installation follows a similar pattern — PTO opening on the side of the transmission case, gear-driven output, and mechanical or electric engagement. Automated manual transmissions (Fuller UltraShift, Meritor FreedomLine) require careful PTO selection because engagement must sync with the automated shift logic. On smaller factory truck transmissions (Ford TorqShift, Ram Aisin, Chevy Allison-1000), we work with the aftermarket PTO options certified for those transmissions and follow chassis-mfr installation guidelines.

Pump Drive And Driveline Alignment

The output side of a PTO installation matters as much as the input. The pump drive shaft between PTO output and pump input needs proper alignment — misalignment causes premature pump failure. We check alignment with dial indicators after mounting the PTO and pump, correct where needed with shim adjustments, and grease all driveline U-joints. On applications where the pump mounts directly to the PTO output (close-coupled configurations), we verify shaft engagement and spline condition before final torque.

Controls, Wiring, And In-Cab Setup

Every PTO installation at our shop includes proper in-cab controls. Solenoid-engaged PTOs (most Allison installations) get a switch mounted cleanly in the dash with wiring routed through the firewall properly. Lever-engaged PTOs get a shift lever routed to the cab. Pressure warning lights and PTO-engaged indicator lights get wired to the appropriate power source with proper fuse protection. On air-engaged PTOs, we plumb the air line from the truck’s air system with proper regulator and valve setup.

Cost And Turnaround

Typical PTO installation pricing depends on transmission type, PTO complexity, and downstream driven equipment. A wet-kit-sized PTO on an OTR tractor with existing chassis provisions runs 6–10 shop hours plus PTO, pump, and hoses. A dump-hoist PTO installation on a class-6 chassis runs 10–16 shop hours plus components. Heavy-duty refuse or vacuum PTO installations are quoted job-by-job. Written estimate before we start. Turnaround is typically 2–5 shop days on standard installs.

PTO Service And Rebuild

Beyond fresh PTO installation, we handle PTO service and rebuild on existing installations — seal replacement when oil leaks appear, bearing replacement when the PTO gets noisy, and full rebuild on higher-mileage PTOs. Getting existing PTOs back to service life extends the useful life of the whole hydraulic system on the truck.
