RV Slide Out Repair: What Actually Breaks

The RV slide is one of the most common RV slide out repair calls we get, because it’s a moving-part hydraulic-or-mechanical system running through a body seam, and everything about that combination invites failure over time. When the slide-out won’t extend, won’t retract, moves crooked, or drops on its own, there is a specific failed component to find and fix — and it’s usually one of a handful of usual suspects. Ames Hydraulics does the hydraulic and mechanical side of RV slide out repair the same way we do any cylinder or hydraulic-system job: diagnose, quote, fix the actual failed part, and prove it works before it leaves.

Three Kinds Of RV Slide-Out Systems

Before troubleshooting, know which system your coach has — the failure modes and repair paths are different. Every RV slide out repair starts here:

1. Hydraulic slide-outs. The slide is pushed and pulled by hydraulic cylinders, usually two per slide, fed by the same pump that powers the leveling system. If leveling is hydraulic on your coach, chances are the slides are hydraulic too. Common on Class A motorhomes, larger fifth wheels, and higher-end travel trailers.

2. Electric rack-and-pinion (Schwintek, In-Wall). A 12V motor drives a gear that runs on a fixed rack inside the wall. Failure modes are motor failure, stripped gears, misalignment, or dead-motor sensors. We do NOT do deep in-wall Schwintek work — that’s an RV-shop specialty. We’ll tell you if that’s what you’ve got.

3. Electric cable-driven. A motor pulls cables that extend and retract the slide. Cable stretching, motor failure, and pulley misalignment are the failures.

Our sweet spot is hydraulic slide-outs and general mechanical/structural work on any slide. If the failure is buried in a wall-mounted Schwintek, we’ll refer you.

The Usual RV Slide Out Repair Findings

Order roughly by frequency:

Slide-out cylinder rod-seal leak. The cylinders that push the slide leak the same way leveling jacks leak — rod seal goes, fluid weeps, pressure drops, slide gets sluggish or won’t move. We rebuild the cylinder in-house.

Low system fluid from a leak somewhere else. If the leveling jacks share the pump, a leveling leak lowers pressure to the slide too. Fix the leveling leak, and the slide often starts working again.

Broken or chafed hydraulic hose to the slide. Hoses that route through pinch points fail. Fabricate and install a new hose.

Weak or failed hydraulic pump. Slides need pressure; a weak pump extends the leveling but can’t push the slide. Rebuild or replace.

Slide roller failure (mechanical). Rollers or guides on the bottom of the slide are worn or broken, so the slide binds even with good pressure. Replace rollers.

Slide-out solenoid or valve stuck. The valve that directs pressure to the slide is stuck open, stuck closed, or leaking internally. Rebuild or replace.

Slide binding on a body seam. Frame flex on the road can push a slide out of alignment with its opening. Requires reshimming or minor frame realignment — welding and mechanical shop work.

  • Slide won’t start moving — pump runs, nothing happens
  • Slide starts moving then quits partway out (or in)
  • Slide extends but drifts back in overnight
  • Slide comes out crooked — one side ahead of the other
  • Loud pump sound, no slide motion
  • Puddle of hydraulic fluid where the slide comes out
  • Slide topper is torn from the slide going out at an angle
  • Both slide and leveling stopped working the same day

  • Slide realignment (weld/shim): $200–$900 depending on complexity
  • Pump rebuild that also fixes leveling and slide together: $250–$800

Should You Repair The Slide Or Live With It?

Owners sometimes wonder if a slide-out is worth the fix or if they should just leave it in and stop using it. Straight answer: on a coach you plan to use for another 2+ seasons, RV slide out repair pays back easily — the alternative is losing the interior space that’s a big part of why you bought a slide-out coach. If the slide-out itself is structurally shot (rotten floor, delaminated walls, torn topper), that’s different — you may be replacing more than just hydraulics.
