Tow Truck Boom, Winch & Wheel-Lift Repair — The Hydraulic Side of Recovery


A tow truck earns with its recovery gear, not its engine. When the boom drifts down under load, the winch won’t free-spool, the wheel-lift folds slow, or the rollback deck stops mid-slide, the truck is out of business no matter how well it drives. Booms That Drift Are Booms That Drop

A boom that settles under load has an internal problem — a leaking cylinder piston seal or a failing holding valve — and it will get worse until the day it gets dangerous. The fix is a cylinder rebuild (hone, reseal, pressure-test) or a holding-valve replacement, and diagnosing which is a bench test, not a guess. This is the single most common tow truck repair we see on older wreckers, and it’s also the one that operators most often live with far too long. A boom holding a car over someone’s driveway is not the place to find out how worn the seals are.

Winches: Motor, Brake, Gears, and Cable

Recovery winches fail in four places. The hydraulic motor wears until the winch is slow and weak under load. The brake wears until the load creeps back — the failure that hurts people. The planetary gear set strips when a snatched load shock-loads it. And the cable frays until it’s a DOT violation and a hand hazard. We rebuild the motors and brakes, replace gear sets, and swap cables to spec. If the winch mount itself is cracking off the deck — common on trucks that pull at bad angles — that’s welded structural repair, and it happens in the same shop on the same visit.

Wheel-Lifts and Rollback Decks

Wheel-lift underlifts live in the worst environment on the truck: low, salted, and slammed. Pivot pins wear oval, cylinders leak from road grit scoring the rods, and the folding linkages crack at their welds. Rollback decks add slide cylinders, cable rollers, and deck-tilt cylinders to the list. All of it is standard work in a tow truck repair visit here — cylinders rebuilt and pressure-tested, pins and bushings machined and fitted in-house, and cracked steel welded and gusseted so it doesn’t crack again in the same spot.

The PTO and Pump Behind It All

Every piece of recovery gear runs off the truck’s PTO and hydraulic pump, and when the whole system is slow — boom, winch, and lift all weak together — the pump or PTO is the suspect, not the individual components. We test system pressure and flow first, so you’re not rebuilding three cylinders to fix a $600 pump problem. It’s the same motor-or-pump logic we apply to every hydraulic motor repair: diagnose the system, then fix the part that’s actually failing.

Annual Inspections for Recovery Gear

Wreckers and rollbacks are commercial vehicles with load-bearing equipment, and the recovery gear deserves the same annual discipline as the DOT side of the truck. A once-a-year tow truck repair inspection here covers boom cylinder drift-testing under load, winch brake holding tests, cable condition against replacement spec, wheel-lift pivot wear measurement, and a flashlight walk of every structural weld on the boom, mount, and underlift. Operators get a written report — what’s fine, what’s wearing, and what’s due — so replacement happens on schedule instead of on a call. Insurance carriers and larger motor clubs increasingly want exactly this paper trail.

Rotators and Heavy Wreckers

The big iron — 35-ton and up heavy wreckers and rotators — is the same work at a larger scale: bigger cylinders, higher pressures, and structural loads that punish any weak weld.
