A jetter that won’t hit pressure is the most common complaint in the drain-cleaning business, and the most expensive to guess at — because the reflex answer is “the pump is shot,” and a new triplex pump is thousands of dollars. Often it isn’t the pump. Ames Hydraulics does sewer jetter repair for municipal and contractor jetters across central Iowa, and this is the diagnostic order we use before anyone spends pump money.
Start With the Nozzle — Seriously
A worn or wrong-size nozzle is the most overlooked pressure thief in jetting. Nozzle orifices erode with every hour of use; as they open up, pressure drops while flow rises, and the pump gets blamed for a $60 part. The check: compare your nozzle’s current orifice size against the pump’s rated flow and pressure — or just run a new, correctly sized nozzle and watch the gauge. If pressure comes back, you’re done. This is step one of sewer jetter repair because it’s free to check and guilty surprisingly often.
Then the Water Supply Side
Plunger pumps can only push what they’re fed. A starved pump loses pressure, runs loud, and cavitates — which will destroy it if it runs that way long. Check the tank-to-pump valve is fully open, the inlet strainer isn’t packed with debris (the usual suspect), the inlet hose isn’t collapsing under suction, and the tank vent isn’t blocked — a vacuum-locked tank chokes the pump slowly as it drains. Supply-side problems masquerade as pump problems constantly, and finding one turns a four-figure repair into a ten-minute cleaning.
The Unloader and Relief Valves
Between the pump and the hose sits an unloader (or regulator) valve, and when it wears or sticks, it bypasses water back to tank instead of sending it downstream — strong pump, weak nozzle. Symptoms of a bypassing unloader: pressure that surges and sags rhythmically, a bypass line that’s hot to the touch, or full pressure that only holds for a second. Unloader rebuild or replacement is a routine, modestly priced piece of sewer jetter repair — and it’s the correct diagnosis on a large share of “dead pump” calls.
Now the Pump: Valves Before Plungers, Plungers Before Panic
If the nozzle, supply, and unloader all check out, it’s genuinely pump time — but pumps fail in stages. The check valves (suction and discharge) wear first: pitted seats and weak springs let water slosh backward, and pressure drops smoothly across all cylinders. Next the plungers and packing: scored ceramic and worn packing show up as drips under the pump and pressure that falls off as the pump warms up. Both are rebuildable — valve kits and packing kits are a fraction of pump replacement. A cracked manifold or a worn crankcase is the only failure that puts full replacement on the table, and it’s the rarest. Hose, Reel, and the Stuff Downstream
Two last thieves worth naming. A jetter hose with internal liner damage can delaminate and flap like a check valve, cutting pressure only when flow is high — maddening to diagnose, cheap to prove by substituting a known-good hose. And a leaking reel swivel bleeds pressure at the joint where the hose meets the drum; if the swivel weeps under pressure, rebuild it. Freeze Damage: the Off-Season Killer
The other great destroyer of jetter pumps isn’t wear — it’s ice. Water left in the pump head, hose reel, or plumbing over an Iowa winter cracks manifolds, splits fittings, and bulges hoses, and none of it shows up until the first warm-day startup ends in spray. Proper winterization — blowing down the system and running RV antifreeze through the pump — takes twenty minutes in November. A Maintenance Rhythm That Keeps Pressure All Season
Jetters reward routine. Weekly during the season: clean the inlet strainer, check pump oil for milkiness (water intrusion), and glance at the gauge against your baseline pressure with a known nozzle. Monthly: inspect the hose for soft spots and the reel swivel for weeping.
