Why Stored Diesel Fails

Three things happen to diesel that sits. It oxidizes — modern ULSD and biodiesel blends age faster than the old stuff, dropping gums and darkening as they degrade. It collects water — condensation off tank walls with every temperature swing, and water is where the real trouble starts. And at that fuel-water interface, microbes grow — the “diesel bug” that builds black sludge mats, corrodes tanks from the inside, and slimes filters shut in hours once it gets stirred up. A generator that runs fine on its monthly no-load exercise can still die under real load, because real load pulls fuel harder and shakes the tank’s sediment into the pickup. That gap between “exercises fine” and “runs under load” is exactly what fuel testing exists to close.

The Derecho Lesson

Iowa learned its stored-fuel lesson in August 2020: multi-day outages across the state put every standby generator to a real test, and a remarkable number failed in the second or third hour — not the first — as deep fuel draw pulled years of tank sediment into filters sized for clean diesel. Units that had passed every weekly exercise died mid-outage with plugged filters and slimed separators, and their owners paid emergency rates to learn what a $150 bottom sample would have told them in July. That’s the case for treating fuel as infrastructure: tested on a calendar, polished when the sample says so, and never assumed. A generator is only as reliable as the dirtiest gallon in its tank, and the dirtiest gallon is always at the bottom, waiting for the long outage to find it.

Common Fuel Questions

How long does diesel last in storage? Six to twelve months untreated before degradation starts; years with proper treatment, dry tanks, and periodic testing. Age matters less than water — a dry tank of old fuel often tests better than a wet tank of new. Is fuel polishing better than replacing the fuel? Almost always — disposal costs money, new fuel costs more, and polishing typically saves 80–90% of the tank. Heavily degraded fuel is the exception, and the test tells us which case you have before anyone commits. What about gasoline? Gas storage is a shorter, harsher story — ethanol blends go bad in months. We service gas systems on carbureted equipment constantly, and the honest answer for stored gasoline is stabilizer, rotation, and small quantities. Additives — snake oil or real? Real when matched to the problem: biocide for microbial growth, stabilizer for oxidation, water dispersant almost never (it moves the problem into the engine).
