Hard Lines: the Repair Most Shops Skip

Hose shops make hoses — so when a steel line fails, they’ll happily replace it with a hose, and sometimes that’s fine. But hard lines exist for reasons: they shed heat better, they don’t swell under pressure, they route through spaces hoses chafe in, and on tractors and older machines they’re original equipment nobody reproduces. Real hydraulic line repair means making the line: cutting, bending, and flaring steel tube to match the failed piece, with the right flare type and the right seat. JIC, O-ring boss, O-ring face seal, NPT, and the metric and British families all look similar to a parts-counter glance — and a JIC nut drawn down on an O-ring face seat will “almost” seal forever, weeping just enough to keep you buying fluid and blaming the seal. We identify fittings by thread gauge and seat geometry, not by eyeball, and we stock adapters across the families. If your machine has a connection that’s been re-tightened five times and still weeps, stop tightening — the sixth crank cracks the flare — and bring it in. Routing and Clamping: Why Lines Fail Young

Reading a Failed Line: What the Break Tells You

A failed line is evidence, and reading it prevents the rerun. A hose burst mid-span with a clean longitudinal split usually means pressure spikes beyond its rating — check the relief valve before hanging the new hose, or the replacement dies the same death. A failure right at the crimp points at a bad assembly or a bend too tight against the fitting. Abrasion failures show their story on the cover — and the fix includes moving or sleeving the line, not just replacing it. A hard line cracked at the flare means vibration found a rigid clamp; the repair adds a cushion or reroutes the stress. And a line that keeps blowing in the same spot no matter what is the system talking — usually a pressure problem masquerading as a plumbing one.
