Piston, Ram, Cylinder: a Quick Translation
Technically, the cylinder is the whole assembly, the piston is the disc inside that the oil pushes against, and “ram” classically means a single-acting cylinder where the rod itself takes the push. In real life, farmers say hydraulic piston, older hands say ram, and catalogs say cylinder — and the failure they’re all describing is the same: it leaks, it drifts, it’s scored, or it’s bent. Whatever word you use on the phone, we know what you mean, and the fix lives on the same bench. What matters isn’t the vocabulary; it’s whether the shop opens the assembly, measures what wore, and rebuilds it to spec — or just slaps seals in and hopes.
How the Failures Show Up
- External leaks — oil weeping past the gland: rod seal gone, usually from a scored or pitted rod that will kill the next seal too, which is why we fix the rod, not just the seal
- Drift — a loader that sags, a ram that creeps under load: piston seals bypassing inside, invisible from outside and confirmed with a simple test
- Bent rods — the cylinder binds or the machine looks wrong: rods straightened or replaced, and our machine shop makes what can’t be bought
- Scored barrels — contamination dragged through the bore: honed back to finish, or re-tubed when honing won’t save it
- Broken mounts and clevises — the welded ends that tear off: repaired and reinforced on the fabrication floor
- Mystery weakness — sometimes the hydraulic piston is innocent and the pump or relief is guilty; the bench test says which before you pay for either
What a Proper Rebuild Includes
Every ram that crosses the bench gets the same sequence: torn down completely, every surface measured — rod straightness, bore condition, gland fit — seals matched by measurement rather than guesswork (critical on older iron where the parts book died with the manufacturer), rods polished, repaired, or re-chromed as the damage dictates, and the assembled cylinder pressure-tested before it leaves. The reseal-only special that skips the measuring is cheaper for exactly one seal life; after that it’s the most expensive repair you can buy twice. The Drift Test You Can Run Tonight
Wondering whether your hydraulic piston is bypassing internally? Run the test we’d run. Put the machine’s load in a safe position — loader bucket two feet up, nothing under it, nobody near it. Shut the engine off, mark the rod position against the gland with a paint pen or tape, and come back in an hour. Meaningful movement means oil is going somewhere: if the cylinder drifted but no oil appeared outside, the piston seals are bypassing internally and the cylinder needs the bench; if there’s oil on the rod or gland, the leak path is external and visible. One caveat that saves misdiagnosis: some circuits drift at the valve, not the cylinder — a worn spool leaks the same symptom. The bench test settles it definitively, which is why we test before quoting: you should pay to fix the part that’s actually failing, and the hour of testing is how we make sure of it.
Common Piston and Ram Questions
Can I just buy seals and do it myself? On simple small cylinders with healthy rods and bores — sure, and we’ll sell you the right seals measured off your parts. The honest warning: if the rod is scored or the bore is worn, new seals die young, and you’ll have done the job twice. My ram is bent — is it scrap? Usually not; rods straighten or get remade, and only a damaged barrel makes replacement the answer. How long does a rebuild take? Two to four days typically; harvest emergencies jump the queue. Is a pitted rod fixable? Yes — polished, welded and re-machined, or re-chromed depending on depth; the hydraulic piston seal only lives as long as the surface it rides on, so the rod always gets fixed first.
