Why Welds Fail — and Why Ours Don’t
Most failed welds we grind out share the same three sins: welded over dirt, rust, or paint (contamination is the number one killer); no thought about why the part cracked (weld the crack without fixing the stress and it cracks beside the repair); and the wrong filler for the base metal. Proper weld repair is mostly preparation — grinding to bright metal, finding the crack’s true ends (they’re always longer than they look), drilling the terminations, choosing filler for the actual alloy, and reinforcing where the engineering wants it. The bead everyone sees is the last ten percent of the job. Common Weld Repair Questions
Can you weld my exhaust/muffler? Usually — thin rusted pipe is a judgment call we make honestly at the bench; sometimes a section replacement beats patching lace. Galvanized parts? Yes, with the coating ground back, proper ventilation, and cold-galv over the repair — never casually, since zinc fumes are a real hazard done wrong. Something that held fuel? Only with proper purging and prep — no exceptions, no matter the hurry. Hardened steel — springs, blades, hitches?
