The Vibration That Won’t Go Away
A driveline vibration at road speed that changes with vehicle speed (not engine RPM) is the classic sign: worn u-joints, a slip yoke with slop, or a shaft that’s lost a balance weight. Left alone, the vibration hammers the transmission tail bearing and the differential pinion bearing — so a $200 driveline repair deferred becomes a four-figure drivetrain job. The check takes minutes: with the vehicle safely supported, grab the shaft at each joint and feel for movement. Any click or play means it’s time.

Ag PTO Shafts: the Fall Rush
Every October brings a parade of PTO shafts — balers, augers, mixers, and mowers with seized telescoping sections, hammered crosses, and missing shields. Most ag driveline repair is same-day or next-day when parts are common, and we keep standard cross kits and yokes on the shelf. Two honest notes: a PTO shaft that won’t telescope is dangerous the day you need it to (that’s how implements get torn up on tight turns), and a missing PTO shield is how farmers lose sleeves and worse — we replace shields as a matter of course, not as an upsell.
Custom Work: When You Can’t Buy the Shaft
Wheelbase changes, wet kit installs that relocate components, older equipment with obsolete shafts, and homemade implements all need a driveshaft nobody sells. We cut, sleeve, weld, and balance to length — a proper custom shaft, not a pipe with yokes tacked on. This kind of driveline repair pairs constantly with our gearbox and wet kit work, because the driveline is always the connector between the power and the point of use.

U-joint jobs typically run $150–$400 depending on access and joint count. PTO shaft rebuilds are $100–$350. Custom shaft fabrication with balancing runs $300–$700. Reading the Clunk: What Driveline Noises Actually Mean
Drivelines announce their failures in a language worth learning. A single clunk on takeoff or when shifting between drive and reverse is spline slop — a worn slip yoke or loose flange bolts. A rhythmic vibration that starts around 45 mph and worsens with speed is imbalance or a u-joint starting to bind. A squeak at low speed, once per shaft revolution, is a dry u-joint begging for grease — the last warning before the needles gall. And a metallic ring or ping under load can be a cracked weld where the yoke meets the tube. None of these get better on their own, and the cheap version of driveline repair is always the one done at the first noise, not the one done from the shoulder of Highway 30 after the joint lets go and the shaft flails into the floor pan or airline bundle. If the noise started recently, the damage is usually still confined to the part making it.
