- Portable dock plate — the classic drop-in plate with side curbs and rear-lock hitch pins. Sizes from 4′ x 3′ up to 8′ x 6′. Rated for pallet-jack, powered pallet-jack, or forklift service.
- Dock leveler edge plate — a replacement front lip for an existing hydraulic dock leveler when the OEM lip is bent, cracked, or missing.
- Trailer-to-dock walk-off plate — heavier plate for pedestrian traffic between a trailer and a warehouse floor, with slip-resistant tread and welded curbs.
- Rail-car dock plate — heavy-capacity plate for rail-siding loading with reinforced edges for gap coverage.

Why Custom Steel Dock Plate Beats Stock
Stock steel dock plate sizes are 4-foot, 5-foot, and 6-foot widths. Almost no truck trailer opening or dock door is exactly one of those. What happens on-site: a 4′ plate rocks in a 4’6″ bay, wheels catch the edge, forklift tips are a real risk. A 5′ plate does not sit into a 4’6″ bay flat either — it lifts one side. Custom-fabricated steel dock plate sized to your bay solves that in one part. The premium for custom over stock is small — often none, once you factor in the freight on a heavy stock plate that did not fit.

We build steel dock plate to real load ratings based on the forklift or pallet jack that will cross it. Common ratings we ship:

Each rating drives the plate thickness, the curb geometry, and the weld pattern. Under-rated steel dock plate is the number-one cause of dock accidents in Iowa distribution buildings. We do not build under-rated plate.

Central Iowa customers pick up. Out-of-state customers get their steel dock plate on a hardwood pallet, strapped, and LTL-shipped. Turnaround from PO to shipped is one to two weeks depending on size and finish — hot-dip galvanized adds three to four days for the coating trip.
Repair and Refurbish Existing Steel Dock Plate
Bent or cracked existing steel dock plate can often be repaired. Common repairs: re-weld broken curb, replace bent hitch pin, add slip-resistant tread to a worn smooth face, replace lift handle. Bring the plate to our Ames shop — we quote against the specific damage. New is not always the right answer.

3/8″ plate handles pallet jack traffic. 1/2″ is the standard for 5,000-6,000 lb forklift crossings. 3/4″ for heavier forklifts or rail-car service. We size against your actual forklift and load.
Do you build dock plates with handles at both ends?
Yes. Two-person lift handles are standard on plates over 300 lb. Cast lift handles for lighter plates.
What is the difference between a dock plate and a dock leveler?
A dock plate is a portable steel plate that drops into place between a trailer and a dock. A dock leveler is a permanently installed hydraulic or mechanical device that pivots to match trailer bed height. We build both, and we build replacement lips for existing levelers.
Can you galvanize my steel dock plate?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanizing adds three to four days lead time and gives outdoor storage life of 20+ years.
