Every big-box parking lot has them. Every fuel island has them. Every drive-up window has them. Steel bollards are the last physical barrier between a moving vehicle and something you cannot afford to have damaged — a gas dispenser, a storefront entrance, a fire hydrant, an outdoor propane cage. But not every steel bollard actually does its job. Cheap thin-wall bollards bend on the first bump. Non-embedded bollards get pushed over. Uncapped bollards fill with water and rust out from the inside. Ames Hydraulics fabricates steel bollards that are built to the actual protection level you need — not to a discount catalog spec.
What Actually Makes A Steel Bollard Work
- Pipe schedule — schedule 40 for light traffic, schedule 80 for real impact protection. Thin-wall fence-post pipe should not be used as a bollard.
- Embedment depth — bollards need to be buried in concrete or set in a footing. A three-foot embedment on a six-foot bollard is the accepted floor for real impact protection.
- Cement fill — filling the pipe with concrete after installation converts it from a bendable tube to a rigid post. Uncapped bollards without fill will bend on a hard hit.
- Dome cap — a welded steel dome cap keeps water out, keeps children off the top, and finishes the appearance.
- Finish — safety yellow is the industry standard for hazard visibility. Custom colors, hot-dip galvanized, or plastic sleeve covers are all options.

Steel Bollards We Fabricate
Embedded steel bollards
The gold standard. Pipe is set 3 feet into a concrete footing and filled with concrete to the cap. Uses schedule 40 or 80 pipe in 4-inch, 6-inch, or 8-inch diameters. Above-grade length usually 30 to 42 inches. Available with painted safety yellow, hot-dip galvanized, or custom colors.
Surface-mount steel bollards
Bolt-down base plate for installation over existing concrete when core-drilling a footing is not practical. Rated for lower impact than embedded but still rigid enough for shopping-cart, foot-traffic, and slow-speed vehicle deflection. Uses 4-inch or 6-inch pipe with a welded base plate and anchor bolt kit.
Removable steel bollards
Pipe sleeve is embedded in the concrete; the bollard drops into the sleeve and is padlocked in place. Common at gated fire lanes, seasonal drive closures, and controlled service access.
Decorative steel bollards
Cast decorative sleeves or fabricated custom-profile bollards for retail, hospitality, and civic sites where visual appearance matters. Same structural pipe inside; the outside can be almost anything.
Sizing Steel Bollards To The Hazard
Sizing steel bollards to the actual hazard is our first conversation with a new customer. A 15-mph parking-lot bump at a storefront is one design case. A 30-mph errant vehicle at a highway-frontage retailer is a different design case. A fuel dispenser strike at a truck stop is a third. We size the pipe schedule, embedment, and spacing against the actual failure mode you want to prevent, not against a stock catalog. That is what separates real steel bollards from decorative posts.
Installation and Delivery
Central Iowa customers get delivery and installation as one line item — we drill the footings, set the bollards plumb, pour and cure, and paint the finish. Out-of-state and larger commercial GC customers order the fabricated steel bollards for their own contractor to install; we ship on pallet, LTL, ready to set. Lead time from PO is one to two weeks for standard, three to four weeks for galvanized or specialty finishes.
Spacing Steel Bollards For Real Protection
Bollard spacing matters as much as bollard strength. A row of steel bollards spaced 8 feet apart will not stop a vehicle from passing between them — a compact car is under 6 feet wide, a delivery pickup is under 8. Standard vehicle-stopping spacing for storefronts is 4 to 5 feet on center. Fuel islands typically use 6 to 8 feet on center because the dispenser itself is between them. Pedestrian entries at drive-throughs and drop-off lanes we usually spec at 4 feet on center. We size the spacing to the actual hazard when we walk your site.
